Happy World Elephant Day 2024

Today marks World Elephant Day, which is an opportunity to celebrate a magnificent animal while also focusing on the hope we have for change. All over the world, elephants are stolen from their families to be forced to live in unnatural environments at zoos, circuses, and attractions, to perform hard labor or act as tourist attractions. But the world is changing; governments (like those in South America) are starting to recognize the sentient nature of elephants and our inability to provide them with even their most basic needs in captivity. Because of this, they are working to end unhealthy captive situations and have their actions progress with scientific understanding. We have to believe that this approach will spread as awareness increases.

Each day, the elephants in our care bring us inspiration for the future. Their capacity for healing and for forgiveness is inspiring. Watching them embrace new lives at sanctuary allows us to believe that change is possible. With this same hope in your hearts, we urge you to go forward and spread the word about elephant welfare and the nurturing home that sanctuary can provide for those in need. Hope is contagious. Open your hearts and spread it around.

So what is slowing down the transfers of elephants in South America to GSE???? I would have thought that by NOW, those 5? African elephants in various Zoos, along with the remaining Asian elephants at Mendoza and other Zoos or other locations would have already been transferred……..The male yards are done, at least enough to accommodate the FEW male elephants in South America.

Honestly, we would have thought that by now the transfers would have happened as well. It’s been two years since our initial paperwork was submitted. But we’re doing all we can to get them here. You know that by now, if there is something more we can be doing, we’re doing it.

Thank you for the beautiful and inspiring video. It reminded me to keep hope and support alive in my heart and to remember the good that has been accomplished even though the work continues. I thank you all from the bottom of my heart for never giving up and for inspiring hope in me. Everyone at Sanctuary, past and present, has been, and continues to be, a hero. Thank you ❤️🐘❤️
