We use the annex in Yard 4 often for treatments, foot trimming, and checkups for the elephants when they are in the back of the habitat. It allows them more freedom, since they don’t have to return to the barn to access a treatment chute – plus it has a small, charming yard attached, which can be entered by walking through the chute. Guillermina has shown some interest in going inside when she’s seen other elephants go through and into the grassy area, but she’s never seemed comfortable enough to completely cross the threshold.
In this video, Scott follows Guille as she decides on her own that she might be interested in exploring the area for the first time. The stall here is similar to the treatment chute in the barn, which she loves. She is tentative as she slowly explores the space – still guarded about some things that are new to her. She’s an excellent example of how it’s okay to take the time you need at sanctuary, even when it comes to the ‘small’ things. Everything happens in its own time.

January 12, 2023 at 3:12 pmI wonder if the chute reminds Guille of the transport crate? Possibly she doesn’t want to get taken from sanctuary back to the pit. She has no way of knowing she is in her forever home. We love you Guille!

January 15, 2023 at 12:59 amEverything is okay. Once a month we do a Facebook fundraiser thank you slideshow. On that day, there’s no blog post. There should be a post for everyone to read on Sunday afternoon.

January 16, 2023 at 9:08 amI just love watching this video. Imagining the conversation in Guille’s head……. “Hold your horses Scott, I’m not sure about all of this. I’ll come when I’m ready to come. Do you have some watermelons?”
