Last weekend, Kat was up the hill and heard a bit of an elephant party coming from the habitat. Scott was already on his way with lunch for the girls and soon found Bambi, Mara, and Rana together and they had lots to say. We have no idea what caused the festivities. Perhaps someone had wandered away and her friends were calling her back, then celebrating when she returned. Honestly, it could have been just about anything. Elephants are amazing at embracing the everyday joys.
When elephants see humans in the habitat, they will often head toward them, hoping there is some sort of treat coming their way – so all three came to the fence for a close up. In the video you can hear Mara make some of her squeaks and chatty sounds. The deep bellows and rumbles are undoubtedly Rana, and Bambi is making heavy, blowing, airy noises with her trunk. On that day, creatures were indeed stirring (though weβre not sure about the mice).
Bambi walks up on the left and stands next to Mara, who is in the middle. Rana stands to the far right.

December 22, 2021 at 2:41 pmI loved the video. I was waiting for a human voice, but think it was better without one – therefore feeling like I experienced an “elephants only” party. π

December 22, 2021 at 4:00 pmYes, it felt more natural on this day to let them communicate amongst themselves. They had quite a bit to chat about.
