Mara and Rana are known for their rumble, squeak, and trumpet parties, which happen almost every day. But it’s not terribly common to see the two grandmas get super spry and spunky in a physical way. They tend to be more subdued in that respect. On the other hand, just because they’re known for their calmer demeanor doesn’t mean that they don’t have some silliness inside. That’s what Mara is demonstrating here.
Rana and Mara often share space in the barn while they’re getting morning treatments done. They will take turns having a session with caregivers while keeping each other company. But on this particular day, Mara opted to go outside and shake some bushes for good measure. Trees and bushes in the habitat are no match for Mara when she’s in a feisty mood. You can see her give them a good thrashing here, showing off her rarely seen rowdy side. It was raining quite heavily, which may have encouraged her to be friskier than normal.
Once Rana heard the commotion, there was little hope of finishing her treatment that day–which is fine; none of her treatments are so important that they can’t wait in circumstances like this. Rana walked outside the barn, seeing Mara with her tail sticking straight out. The two reunited and lots of rumbles and squeaks followed, with Mara even lifting her foot to Rana, which she often does as a sign of affection. She touches Rana’s face gently, caressing her face and ear. It’s obvious that the bond the two share is special, and they both enjoy being a little silly now and then.

February 18, 2025 at 10:10 pmI think I have a new favorite video! I love their joy that shows through in their elephanty ways that we’ve learned about through others videos–the rumbles, squeaks, trumpets, foot lifting, stuck-out tail. Sara, your posts continue to bring a great time to us all! Thank you!!
