A Rainy Afternoon Near the Barn

Some days, there’s nothing quite so relaxing as a gentle sanctuary rain. Add to that the sound of elephant ears flapping and, of course, Bambi’s low rumbles, and you’re almost ready for a nap. Here, we’ve caught Bambi, Maia, and Guillermina in a little bit of a drowsy moment. After breakfast, they often enjoy a few minutes of sleep standing up. (During the day, elephants mostly stand to snooze. They often lie down for a few hours at night.) Maia is most prone to catch some zzz’s in the morning, but Guille is becoming more and more likely to grab a short nap herself.

Bambi is standing in the yard vocalizing–and, of course, Maia and Guille are right there by her side. Maia is being incredibly gentle, standing shoulder-to-shoulder with Bambi and sweetly touching her face on several occasions. For her part, Guille walks around the two, situating herself on Bambi’s opposite side. She pauses for only a few seconds before heading off for a quick graze before the real sleepiness sets in.

Those rumbles must feel incredible when you are nearby. It must be very interesting to try to discern the different rumblings.

Usually my cat hates for me to be on my cell. Today I played this video and he was riveted by Bambi ‘s rumbles! His eyes got really big. Then he lay down and went to sleep!
