A New View of Rana and Mara

As we have explained before, there are times when it’s difficult to get close-up videos of the elephants. They seem to know when they are being filmed and will sometimes appear to change their behavior when they see a camera, but we do our best to capture short clips like this video of Mara (left) and Rana (right).

It’s the dry season at sanctuary, which means it’s hot and arid, and many of the trees are shedding their leaves. There are still some green bushes and grass to snack on so the elephants often gather in those spots. Both elephants have their ears out, as they listen to identify the foreign noise, and Rana’s tail is swinging gently. You can see their faces clearly, plus you get a little glimpse of the fuzzy hair on Rana’s head. She gently touches Mara on the cheek for reassurance, and the two step forward as if they are ready to roam some more.
