During the morning, we were preparing for Bambi’s treatment. Each day (as long as she is up for it), we treat her eye, which gets special drops, and the side of her face and her tail, which got injured quite a while back when she laid down; it takes elephant injuries a particularly long time to resolve themselves, so those pressure injuries still get cleaned and medicated every morning. The abrasions themselves are healed at this point, but we are just ensuring that the skin in the area is healthy and free of extra layers of growth which appeared as the body’s response to trying to help things heal. Bambi is excellent about getting her checkups and knows exactly what to do when asked. She’s a real gem when it comes to treatment sessions.
Here, Guillermina was standing near the fence, with her trunk resting on one of the bars. Maia walks up behind and joins her. Almost immediately afterward, Bambi walks up and wedges herself between the other two elephants, squeezing into the narrow spot that separated them. And it was a really narrow spot. In other words, she made a Bambi sandwich with the two other girls.
When we drove up on the 4-wheelers, all three had been playing in the dirt, so they were nice and coated–the perfect preparation for making mud should a rain shower appear. There were lots of rumbles and trumpets from all three elephants. They seemed content as can be after enjoying their morning snacks.

Help take extra special care of an elephant that is close to your heart.
