Just How Tall is Sandro?

You may have noticed that the fences in the Male Asian Habitat are taller than the ones you see in the Female Asian Habitat. That was by design, since male elephants are stronger than females and, until they are geriatric, they go through musth. (We recently talked about what that is here.) When Baby was in the male habitat, she looked small when positioned against the fence, but Sandro is a pretty big guy and stands taller than the highest horizontal bar.

The fence is about 2.75 meters and, since he is taller than that and, based on his head height when he was in the crate, we estimate that Sandro is closer to 3 meters, which is just short of 10 feet. Sandro still needs to put on weight, since his height-to-weight ratio is not where it should be. As he builds muscle, he will be even more impressive physically–though he will only grow out, not up.

I LOVE Mr. Sandro. I just think he is exquisite. He is so cooperative and seems to have the best disposition for the years he has been in the horrid zoo environment not being able to be an elephant. YOU GO Mr. Sandro. Keep on exploring to gain strength and help your feet and joints. 🐘❤️😊💕

Are the higher percentage of male elephants taller than female? He is just a handsome guy. I wish you guys could allow breeding because they are getting fewer and you could help prevent extinction. Ty for all you do.

Males are generally taller than females, which is why the fences in the male habitat are also taller than those in the female habitat. And we definitely can’t support captive breeding. Even if it wouldn’t harm the female elephants (and due to age and illness, it probably would), it could harm Sandro. And all that would result would be another elephant in captivity. The answer is to protect their natural environment.

Sandro is big and beautiful, and when his muscles are conditioned by sanctuary I’m sure he will look even more formidable.
