So far, Baby has been spending her time in the yards near the barn. The other elephants have visited her there, but she hasn’t ventured into Yards 4 or 5. In order to introduce her to the wider sanctuary world, we gave her a look at a new space.
When Rana and Mara were in the barn for treatment sessions, the care staff opened up Yard 4 and let Baby have a look around. We could see that she was heading toward Creeky Alley, which was interesting to her for a couple of minutes; she checked out the new area and then headed into the woods back in the direction she came from. The caregivers couldn’t see her for a few minutes, but she eventually headed back toward the barn, meeting Mara and Rana near the square, where the gates for the yards meet.
Baby seems to feel comfortable in the smaller yards so far. It’s a place she’s used to and we’ll continue to give her the opportunity to interact with the other elephants, but on her own time. While she’s enthusiastic, she is still working on the best ways to build relationships with them. Time will tell whose personalities she’ll gel with the best, but we’re letting the girls decide the amount of time they would like to spend with each other. Even Baby, with all her enthusiasm, still needs time to herself as she continues to process her new environment and new life.

September 30, 2026 at 6:25 pmI think it’s wonderful that you’re giving Baby the time and space that she needs to explore the sanctuary yards, interact with the other elephants, and option to do what she’s most comfortable doing. She’s a stunning girl, and I’m excited for her new sanctuary journey and the bonds that she’ll be making with the others 🐘💚🩵
