During the afternoon, caregivers were driving by Yard 5 and found Maia in the pond. Of course, by the time we got our camera out, she’d already begun climbing out. But, we did witness her rolling on both sides in the water, submerging and getting super wet. You can see in this video that she has one small spot on her back, which she somehow managed to keep dry. We’ll never know how!
Bambi (in the back) looked on, grazing slowly in the sun. Guillermina (on the right) was also munching on some grass, her tail swinging enthusiastically from side to side. Maia headed over to join Guille, where they continued to snack together, all while keeping Bambi in sight. This is a great example of how each individual can seek out what meets their wants and needs, all while sharing space with their friends.

February 23, 2026 at 2:53 pmGorgeous Maia 🩷
Question: do they ever communicate by slamming the soil with their trunk? I noticed this behavior in other places but not our girls.

February 23, 2026 at 4:03 pmSometimes they do hit the ground with their trunks, but none of them do it very hard. It’s possible that African elephants might do it more, since their trunks are different.

February 23, 2026 at 4:55 pmIt never stops pleasing me to see how these three girls have found such friendship and are living the rest of lives in harmony with each other. Having seen all of their individual journeys, and then having watched the social difficulities each one experienced after their arrival at Sanctuary, I find continual joy knowing all three have found union, safety, and love with each other. If we can actually see “peace”, then truly it is there watching them enjoy their life together. Thank you for all that you do. Find strength to continue.

February 23, 2026 at 11:58 pmSuch a peaceful scene. Love the green grass and shrubs and the pond. It warms my heart to see them so happy and enjoying each other’s company and Mother Nature. This is the life they should have always had, isn’t it? Who wouldn’t love spending the day in this surrounding with best friends?
