Kenya is having some lighter moments lately and, though we know she’s still mourning Pupy, she’s doing her best to seek out places and things that bring her comfort. She has quiet times but, in her heart, she’s a joyful elephant and that shines through.
In the morning, just as caregivers were gearing up for breakfast, we found Kenya near Club Mud in Yard 1. Rather than immediately come to the fence for her food, she decided to splash around for a while, throwing mud all over herself. The wallow is plumbed, so it has a continuous supply of water for Kenya to toss around, and sometimes it gets delightfully messy.
When we walked near Kenya to place her snacks by the fence, we saw that she was blowing bubbles in the muddy water. You can catch a small glimpse of that at the beginning of this video, but she stopped when we came close (of course). We let her know where we’d left her meal, but she decided to spend an extra 10 minutes relaxing in the cool water.
P.S.: Some of our amazing supporters, Friends of Global Sanctuary for Elephants, are hosting a special Halloween fundraiser, the Treats for Feets initiative. Your gifts will be dedicated to the expenses surrounding Kenya’s footcare–something she’ll need for the rest of her life. Be a part of her continued healing at sanctuary.

Help take extra special care of an elephant that is close to your heart.

I’m in the Friends of GSE group and donated towards Kenya’s feet treatment, as they are in urgent need of care, poor sweetheart, she has endured so much living in that concrete pit in Mendoza for so long, love you Kenyacita! 🐘💕 Stay strong, you’re a brave girl ❤️
