At certain points throughout each day, caregivers may encourage the elephants to shift over into a neighboring yard so that spaces can be safely cleaned or to allow various maintenance tasks to be completed. We also use that time to “decorate” the empty yards with the miscellaneous surprise treats we leave for the elephants to explore and find. On a recent afternoon, Kat had been checking to make sure all of the connecting gates between each yard were appropriately open or closed, depending on what was going on where.
After dinner, Guillermina caught sight of Kat at the fence and walked over, seemingly in hopes that she might be able to get a treat. (Funnily enough, Kat had a spare banana with her, so Guille got a little extra bite while her friends finished up their hay.) This video shows her heading Kat’s way, demonstrating the charming bounce in her step and her quick pace. Guille’s distinctive lilt is similar to that of African elephants, which you might notice by watching Pupy and Kenya walk. Eventually, Maia and Bambi met Guille by the fence and they vocalized back and forth for a moment before heading out into the woods, perhaps looking for some of those carefully placed decorations.

Help take extra special care of an elephant that is close to your heart.
