Pupy Versus the Tree

Pupy’s explorations of her habitat are currently never ending, since she keeps finding new things to see, play with, and eat. She’s very curious about her new space, which is encouraging her brain to work in ways that it has not in a very long time. When in a sterile captive environment, an elephant might sometimes have to shut down in order to survive. Now that Pupy has new things that spark interest and challenge her to think critically, she can finally unlock whatever parts of her that she put away years ago.

Finding small trees to tussle with is a favorite pastime for Pupy. Here you can see how she uses her tusks to maneuver the tree, bending and snapping it before finally grabbing a bite from the top. Her energy is so different from that of the female Asian elephants, which is clear to see here. While those girls might get feisty at times, their approach to their surroundings and their energies are not the same. The more we see of Pupy, the more we’ll see of these African elephant behaviors, which we are excited for her (and you) to experience.

Love watching Pupy explore and forage. Is there a chance her trunk will become stronger with more use?

We are hoping that’s the case, but won’t know until we’ve been able to observe some more.

This is great stuff! It’s exciting because we are able to experience it virtually alongside her.

Pupy is so inquisitive, everything is new & exciting for her. I’m sure captivity drained her of anything intelligent, interesting, because there was nothing. Like living in a vacuum with nothing to look forward to.
I can hardly wait for her to meet all the other ladies 🩷

It depends. One night, she was exploring all night, but other nights she has stayed more in one place. Sometimes when it’s super sunny, she’ll want to be in the barn and take a standing nap, although now she is starting to realize there is shade from trees in the habitat. So weather and mood play a role.

As mentioned, Pupy’s energy is so, so different than what we are used to from the girls (in the Asian habitat). Her energy is part of why she is so enthralling. I am very excited to see more of and learn more from and about Pupy. I am in love with Pupy!
