After lunch, the caregivers noticed Guillermina near the pond in Yard 4. She was completely soaked, so it made sense that she must have been totally submerged in the water. There was a big splash, and all of a sudden they saw Maia standing there in the middle of the pond.
Maia then proceeded to get extra silly, spraying water in the air. The resident “pond blob” was in full relaxation mode, laying down on her side, swimming completely under the surface, and rolling around to get extra soggy and muddy. She eventually got back up and stood in the middle of the pond for a few minutes (which you can see here) before walking out to snack on some long grass. It’s always a treat when we get to see Maia truly enjoying herself in one of her favorite spots.
P.S.: Look how quickly Maia gets out of the water. She has nice, strong legs and moves more quickly than an elephant that is 50 years old.

Help take extra special care of an elephant that is close to your heart.
