Dr. Trish ordered some tamarind for the elephants to enjoy, or to at least see if they were interested in trying. It can be used medicinally as a homeopathic treatment for diarrhea and constipation. While none of the girls are experiencing serious stomach issues, it’s a good idea to keep the elephants’ gut health in check. Most elephants love tamarind, and in Thailand they use tamarind balls to offer medicine to elephants because they find it so delicious.
Maia, Guille, and Bambi made it clear that they were not interested in the new fruit, dropping it immediately when the fruit (without the shell) was placed in their trunks. Mara took it, smelled it, dropped it, and then picked it back up to eat. Rana took hers and ate it immediately; she’s the only girl who even eats tamarind with the shell on. The caregivers will try to incorporate the tree fruit into their daily diets somehow–at least for the elephants who are feeling adventurous.
P.S.: Don’t forget that the exclusive, members-only Pathfinders event with Scott and Kat is scheduled for March 29. All current and new Pathfinders are welcome to join us for the virtual event. Ask the questions you’ve always wanted to know the answers to, hear stories of sanctuary life, and make some friends along the way! Sign up to be a Pathfinder here.
