Maia’s Palm Leaf Snack

When you hear the unmistakable sounds of branches snapping and crunching, you can almost guarantee that an elephant is eating a palm branch nearby. Here, that elephant is Maia, and she has decided to enjoy a loud, but tasty, snack. Palms grow in abundance throughout the sanctuary property, and caregivers will cut some large leaves for the elephants to eat. Bambi took a bite of the stalk, but she and Guillermina seemed to prefer having some hay instead. Maia doesn’t appear to object to having the palm all to herself.

Not very dainty, are they? 😄 The first sanctuary I followed was PAWS in California. They have African elephants. They had videos of them eating branches from trees, which always amazed me.
