It’s Time to Ask Us Anything!

Today, we’d like to invite you to “Ask Us Anything” by sending questions about things you’ve always wanted to know. Questions can be about big-picture topics or about any little thing. We may not be able to answer everyone, but we’ll definitely get to as many topics as possible. Please post your questions in the comments section by the end of the day on Monday, October 14, and we’ll respond soon.

P.S.: We know there are many questions about upcoming rescues, but we won’t be able to provide any information here. All new information will be shared with you directly in its own post.

For training elephants skills like cooperating for foot treatments etc., does the team use clickers (or any other sound producing instrument) like we do for dog training?

I have a question regarding the ladies that walk with a limp. I know Rana swing one of her legs when she walks but in a recent video I believe it was Maia walking with a limp as well. Is something wrong with one of her front legs? If so, what happen to her?

Having spent time at the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust in Kenya, I got the distinct sense that the orphaned eles are very aware of the scope of the trust’s work and what the goals are. When new eles arrive after being rescued, the existing orphans embrace them, show them the ropes, and guide one other on the path toward eventual re-wilding (when they choose, always on their own terms). A human-ele collaboration.

Do you think the GSE resident eles have a similar big picture awareness that helps them on the path to healing? Do some ele individuals more than others have a greater capacity to see or understand the goal of autonomy and freedom from exploitation that you have for them?

They clearly begin to change from the first moments you interact with them, which makes me feel like they understand so much of what you hope for them.

Do you need any more fundraising done to accommodate Kenya, Kuki & Pupi, and Tamy? Or for anything related to their coming to GSE?

Elephants are so empathetic, altruistic, sympathetic, intelligent beings as we all know- we witness the elephants helping each other out in different ways all the time. I was wondering if Scott or Kat have ever encountered one of the elephants ,at GSE or anywhere , coming to help their humans in any way such as if they saw you in distress or emotional or in need of help of sorts-in a moment of interspecies connection-where that elephant really wanted to make it better/safer for the human out of concern for their human’s wellbeing…..like when your dog sees you upset about something and he/she comes and lays their head in your lap to soothe you.

I know that Guille’s father is waiting for sanctuary. Are there any more bulls in South America that need help getting out of zoo type situations and will they be able to be taken and kept in sanctuary?

Do you think the other elephants understood that Pocha was Guilermina’s mom? If so, do they show that in some ways? I am just curious as to how they understand and communicate this, it’s just very fascinating.
