Very Muddy Elephants

We’ve had a recent break in the heat that the caregivers are appreciating when it’s time to clean up elephant dung from the yards. When it’s cooler out, the elephants will sometimes walk around more during the day. In the morning, all five girls were in the yards by the barn. After checkups and treatments, Mara went into Yard 1 with Maia and Bambi. Maia and Mara ended up in the mud wallow together while Bambi stood not too far away. Guillermina was in Yard 2 with Rana, so there was a new mix of elephants hanging out together.

Eventually, the elephants all left and went into Yard 4. Somewhere along the way, they all ended up finding mud, because there was an entire bunch of delightfully dirty elephants at dinner. Mara and Rana ended up by the water trough eventually and the rest of the girls were farther down the fence line. It was a lovely evening punctuated by some gorgeously muddy ladies.

P.S.: Listen to the newest episode of Global Rumblings to hear more about Bambi and her experience at the Ribeirao Preto zoo. Bambi was a perfect example of living life “on elephant time.”

Do you ever let them into the male yard where Lady used to hang out?

We haven’t opened up the male yard again, no. They seem content to be together in the yards they’re used to roaming.

Great to hear the cooling rains were good for everyone. I don’t suppose the caregivers joined in the mud baths?! Nice to hear that Mara and Maia spent more time at one wallow together and all the other girls were mixing up too and getting cool, lovely photo of Rana!
