World Animal Day: Protecting Wildlife, Big and Small

When people think of Global Sanctuary for Elephants, they picture Kenya, Pupy, Maia, Rana, Bambi, Guillermina, Mara, and the others who have found peace here. But sanctuary also cares for countless wild animals in need of healing.

Through our wildlife rehabilitation program, created with Scott and Kat’s decades of experience and in partnership with SEMA, the state’s environmental authority, we have become the only licensed aviary rehabilitation and release facility in Mato Grosso, Brazil and athe leading rehabilitation and release facility in the region. Here, animals receive expert care, minimal human interaction, and the chance to return to the wild where they belong.

Animals We’ve Helped Together

To date, the sanctuary has rescued and released:

  • Critically endangered Chaco eagle (fewer than 1,500 remain in the wild)
  • Hyacinth macaws
  • Blue and gold macaws
  • Harpy eagle
  • Toucans
  • Tapirs 
  • Anteaters
  • Tortoises
  • Deer
  • Owls
  • Coatis, and many more

Each one arrived in need and was given the chance to recover and return home to the wild.
