Why Hay is Essential

Most elephants arrive at the sanctuary in poor physical health, either due to illness or prolonged periods of inadequate feeding. Many of our rescues are older elephants who have endured decades of this neglect. Their digestive systems are often compromised due to unnatural feeding patterns in captivity. In the wild, elephants graze for up to 20 hours a day, consuming small amounts continuously. However, in captivity, they are typically fed a few large, concentrated meals, which can wreak havoc on their digestion and put excessive strain on their kidneys, liver, and overall health.

To help their long-term recovery, we must supplement their diets with a significant amount of hay. The hay we purchase is high-quality and nutritionally balanced, providing the right nutrient ratios to support healing and long-term well-being for our herd.

During the rainy season, the habitat provides some natural foraging, but because of the damaging effects of captivity, we must carefully supplement their diets to ensure they gain weight and receive all necessary nutrients. During the dry season, when the natural grasses thin out, hay becomes even more essential.
