Baby Might Be Vocalizing With the Others

We’re hearing lots of elephant vocalizations at night but, from what we’ve been able to tell, until now what we’ve been hearing were familiar voices. Some (or all) of the more senior residents have things to say, but we’re not sure if they’re saying them to Baby. But, as we always say, just because we don’t hear trumpets or rumbles going back and forth doesn’t mean that the elephants aren’t communicating in some non-verbal way. 

While it’s hard to tell for sure, last night we heard a quiet sound that seemed to be a little unfamiliar. It was sort-of a combination of a rumble and an elephant blowing air out of her nose. We’re not well versed in all of Baby’s noises, so we can’t be sure it was her, but it’s very possible that she decided to chime in with the other girls. She may be experimenting to see what happens when she makes her own noises. Once she becomes more comfortable expressing herself here, she could potentially add her voice to the evening chorus.

      We don’t have a date right now. It takes many weeks to get some of the test results.

    Adorable Baby girl😍I’d like to think she’s communicating with her soon to be friends and they are doing the same. Soon, they’ll meet up and lots of trumpeting and rumblings will be heard from all of them🥰

    It is so interesting that just like ellies have different personalities, sounds like they have individual ways of communicating as well! Have you ever dealt with any elephants that you never heard any vocalization from, or do they usually make sounds, or rumbles, or trumpets, etc in some form? I continue to be fascinated and enchanted by their individualities!! I can only imagine the spectrum you all have witnessed over time! ❤️🐘❤️ Love and hugs to all!

      Scott said pre-sanctuary, yes, but all of the elephants in Tennessee and Brazil have all made some sort of vocalizations.

    Sharing these little tid bits of information hinting at communication between the girls really does help with making the wait for a happy meeting more bearable. Please do this as often as humanly possible. Lol.

      She’s in quarantine now and will be for a number of weeks. Once we get the test results in, we can begin to introduce her to the other girls.

    Great if it was! she has so much to get to know, and maybe the biggest is yet to come – with the girls. She looks as if she’s getting beautifully relaxed, feeling safe. They are amazing !
