Sunday Smile: Hats Across the Sanctuary

May 3, 2026

Female Asian elephant Rana faces forward with a pile of hay atop her head

To make you smile this Sunday, we’ve got a charming photograph of the lovely Miss Rana. One afternoon, when doing a check-in with the girls, the caregivers noticed that all five elephants had tossed hay onto their heads. Perhaps they were looking for some sun protection that afternoon, but it’s always possible that there was a silly vibe throughout the entire sanctuary that day. We’ll never know, but we love seeing how everyone decorated themselves at the same time.

I like to think of them as crowns instead of hats.
