To our sanctuary family, it is with the heaviest of hearts that we share the news that Pupy passed away late last night, moments after collapsing. She had been having on-and-off gastrointestinal issues over the past days. She had a history of colic, so we knew this was a possibility, but even on her pickiest days, she continued to eat, and we found a medication regimen that seemed to make her comfortable. Her appetite improved and was returning to normal. Yesterday her appetite was off again, and in the early afternoon, when she defecated, she passed about 3 lbs of black rocks, rocks that are not from this area. Everything after that shifted. Pupy appeared weaker, she was a little more distant with her humans, and things overall felt different.
We continued to care for her throughout the day, and at night feed, she seemed a little unsteady on her feet. As Scott went to give her water, her feet went out from underneath her and she collapsed. Kenya was immediately concerned, but allowed us to shift her into the next yard, where she watched from only about 20 yards away while we rushed to help Pupy. Dr Trish, who is here for six weeks, started treating Pupy, but she passed away within moments. The gate was reopened so Kenya could come over to Pupy and stay with her friend. Although Kenya wanted to be close to Pupy, she also seemed a little hesitant to touch her initially, but settled in after a short while and spent the night by her side.
This is one of the most difficult parts of sanctuary. We take geriatric elephants who have lived decades without a proper diet, any medical care, and no foot treatment for the majority of, if not their entire life. We hope that sanctuary and individualized care can heal some of those physical issues, allowing them to enjoy aspects of an elephant’s life that were taken away when they were just a couple of years old. But we know the negative effects of captivity are significant, and sometimes insurmountable.
When Scott first visited Pupy and Kuky in Buenos Aires and was told they were in their late twenties, he was shocked; their appearance made them look at least twice that age. Their bodies showed the impact that the first couple of decades of captivity had on them, and it was devastating. The new team at the ecoparque worked hard to get them in better condition, but when Scott made the first visit to try and move Pupy, he saw tremors in her trunk and her eye, and there was significant concern that something was wrong with her that went much deeper. We always try to push the darker unease to the side and hope that the elephants will live a long life at sanctuary, but keep our concerns in consideration when it comes to treating their physical health. Unfortunately, it seems in this instance that she may have been suffering from something chronic that didn’t show up on her blood work or any other exams that were run.
A pathology team will be coming to perform a necropsy this afternoon, which may hopefully give some more information, but unfortunately, we don’t always get the answers we are searching for. They may find something that could suggest what happened, but we won’t receive a full report until all samples come back, which is usually 2-3 months at the earliest.
Although not the most aesthetically pleasing photo, it was taken from one of the security cameras a few days ago and captured a beautiful moment. It is the moment that Pupy let go of all of her fears and allowed Kenya to stand over her and protect her, which required significant vulnerability from Pupy. The big sister role seemed to be something Kenya was born to do, and Pupy dropping that final wall brought such joy to Kenya, but also gave Pupy something she’s never had before: an elephant who put her first, who would love her, protect her, and prioritize her no matter what. Although space, autonomy, and nature are enormous gifts that humans gave to Pupy, Kenya provided her something much deeper that even leaving her earthly form can never take away from the both of them.
We want to thank everyone who was a part of bringing both of these remarkable elephants to sanctuary and giving them the opportunity for this life and for the joy that they brought each other. We will try to keep you updated in the next few days about how Kenya is doing. This morning she let out a big rumble upon approach and seemed to be handling things well. She became quieter as the morning progressed, but her caregivers will do their best to nurture her heart during this time.

Help take extra special care of an elephant that is close to your heart.

October 11, 2025 at 6:45 pmYou cannot do an ultrasound on an elephant’s digestive system. Pupy suffered decades of captivity and that takes an incredibly hard toll on the body. No matter how much care she got at sanctuary, if she had systemic problems they would have been going on likely for years. This is why zoos are an incredibly harmful environment for elephants. They often die decades younger than they would have in the wild.

October 11, 2025 at 8:00 pmNo puedo creer esta terrible y triste noticia.

October 11, 2025 at 1:51 pmOh how sad and tragic… just when Kenya had found another elephant and the two of them were growing closer. Beautiful photo of Kenya watching over her friend. I am so sorry for everyone there at sanctuary… and so very sorry and sad for Kenya, who is once again alone after just knowing such joy.. but glad that there was at least a little time for them to find each other. Pupy, be at rest, no more difficulties… I’m sure there are all the elephants gone before you just waiting to greet you in a beautiful, forever place.

My heart is breaking for Kenya who finally had a friend. I can’t believe this. I am so very sorry. I can’t imagine the grief you are all feeling. It is all quite unimaginable that this has happened. The fact that people that support the bureaucracy our responsible for holdimg back these elephants from coming to sanctuary…. That don’t realize the death sentence they put on these precious elephants. I am mad and beyond sadness. Bless you all at this terrible time. Bless the elephants. May Pupy rest in peace with Kuky. October 11, 2025 at 6:49 pmPupyta querida.

Vuela alto bella 🕊🐘😭

October 11, 2025 at 7:21 pmI cannot say how sad, how shocked I am. I am glad to hear of the furthering of the bond between Pupy and Kenya, although I do so worry for Kenya’s heart and soul. I don’t even know where to start putting my thoughts and feelings yet. I will just say for now, I am sorry for everyone there, too. And I do thank you and am glad that so many contributed to giving Pupy the best in these last few months.

October 11, 2025 at 8:34 pmIt is so hard to believe that our precious beautiful Pupy has gone into the heavenly herd with so many others who have left this earth before her. My condolences to everyone who loved her from all over the world. Most especially my sympathies for all of the team at the Sanctuary who took such awesome care of her body, mind and spirit while she was in your care. I think she finally figured out who she was as a free, autonomous elephant being and it was that which helped her to have a healthy friendship with Kenya on her own terms. Both of them giving a little to the other to come together in respect and affection. You all gave her that awesome gift with your compassionate and loving care. I grieve her loss. I grieve for Kenya and her loss of her only elephant friend she was ever allowed to have. At the same time, I am happy for both Kenya and Pupy that they had that beautiful friendship for a time though we all wish it could have been for a much longer time. Their budding relationship added Joy and peace to both of their lives. Thanks for giving them this opportunity and for Pupy being able to transition in a natural environment and knowing she was well loved. May God comfort you in your grief.

October 12, 2025 at 3:14 amMy heart is broken, once again we see the results of captivity and abuse of the most beautiful of creatures. Pupy stole our hearts from the moment she arrived, free at last and with so much to look forward to. Her friendship with Kenya was growing and they gave us so much joy as we watched them getting to know one another.
Once again my tears flow and will do so for days to come, tears for our loss , tears for the short time she had of happiness and tears for Kenya who once again has lost the chance of a beautiful friendship. My heart goes out to Scott, Kat and your wonderful team, I can’t imagine how hard this must be for you , you worked so hard to ring Pupy to freedom .
My heart is totally broken and you must be so so devastated.
Pupy you will never be forgotten, you will always be in our hearts , we will remember your arrival and how long you kept us waiting to see you step out into freedom, we will remember your first tree, your first meeting with Kenya and so much more that gave us joy. You deserved so much more. Rest in peace beautiful girl.

Thank you for all your care, support and dedication, you give to these , beautiful souls! I am so saddened. She had just short of 6 months of freedom! It so angers me that humans display elephants for their own benefit, no concerns of their health and well being! Pupy will always be in our hearts! RIP my precious girl!

October 12, 2025 at 10:58 amGlobal Sanctuary for Elephants is a NON-PROFIT organization and do not receive money for accepting elephants. However, we do spend significant funds to rescue and bring the elephants home. The elephants who live here are mostly elderly and come with many medical issues after years of no care at zoos or circuses. There are times when even the best care can’t overcome decades of neglect.

October 12, 2025 at 10:05 amAs an Argentine, I felt the need to help free Pupy, Kenya, and all of them from captivity. I adopted Pupy, and my Swahili-speaking client from Africa called me Mama Tombe (Mama Elephant). I loved reading your stories, your freedom, because you made me feel as free as you were. I’m very sad because I think you should have enjoyed it more. But I know that in the last moments of your life, you were surrounded by everyone’s love. I will always carry you in my soul, my big girl. I love you.
