VOLUME UP! On a recent evening after dinner, Guille had finished her meal before Maia and Bambi, so she came to the fence near where Kat was standing, seeming to seek out some affection. Most of the time she doesn’t look for attention from humans, and it feels as though she prefers the company of her sisters. That’s an ideal response, since it’s healthier for them to spend most of their time in elephant company.
Since she seemed interested in an interaction, Kat thought it would be a good opportunity for some training practice since Guille likes the mental engagement and to show how smart she is. They did a few basic behaviors so that Guille could have her fence time, which she sees Bambi get twice daily for her meds, and she got some extra fruit as a treat for doing everything she was asked to do. Perfectly, of course.
Eventually, Maia and Bambi finished their meals and decided to join Guille, positioning themselves on either side of her. Guille’s excitement at her friends’ arrival caused her to vocalize in her unique Guillermina way. Maia takes a turn making noises, using the squeak that usually calls Bambi to her side. As usual, it worked, and Bambi crossed over to stand next to Maia. For her part, Guille found a bit of leftover hay and busied herself with that. It was a brief-but-sweet moment between three friends who obviously care about each other very much.

Help take extra special care of an elephant that is close to your heart.
