We have a small caregiver prep building at the barn and we’re replacing the roof with insulated panels to allow in more natural light and to help keep the building cooler. Unfortunately, we had to cut a tapir-planed papaya tree that had begun leaning on it. Not wanting to waste such beautiful browse, we decided to give it to the nearby Mara and see how she felt about it. She walked right over and checked it out, immediately breaking it.
You can see in the video how she uses her back foot to hold the tree down while she lifts it with her trunk to snap it. Later, she continued to dismantle it, even walking away carrying one large chunk of the trunk. Rana stopped by to check out the good-looking snack. When the caregivers went back down to feed everyone dinner, Rana had a chunk of the tree in her mouth, but the rest was gone. Between the two of them, they made short work of the tree.

Help take extra special care of an elephant that is close to your heart.
