Sunday Smile: A Peaceful Evening at Sanctuary

This week’s Sunday Smile is brought to you by Scott, who caught this magical moment as the light was fading from the sanctuary sky. Because it was the end of the work day, there were no radios calling and no vehicles nearby, so the sounds the elephants were making seemed amplified.

You can hear Bambi walking across the yard to Maia and Maia ripping grass from the ground. Both girls were flapping their ears, so that sound reverberated. Maia and Bambi were hanging out in the pasture in Yard 5 by the water trough. Bambi gently walked over to Maia, who was grazing along the fence. After turning off his camera, Scott said thank you to the girls. The two elephants responded with a joint rumble. It’s gratifying to have moments of beauty like this, where the girls are truly in their element, simply being elephants.

Lovely to watch. Thanks for sharing. Maia didn’t seem to be eating the grass, just ripping it up. Is this an exercise of boredom, frustration of some kind or does she just enjoy the noise & motion? Do the girls spend their nights out in the yards all the time or do they ever go back to the barn to relax in there?

Maia does eat the grass but they usually rip up a few trunkfuls before putting it in their mouth. The girls almost always spend their nights in the habitat. They seem to love to wander, graze, and nap in the cooler evenings.

Wonderful, thank you. I find the videos, updates & podcast episodes on the girls fascinating. There is endless material as they’re so complex & always up to something we want to watch or hear about. I’m looking forward to when the new eles are able to arrive. Thrilling & will finally free them into a much deserved environment with other ele company & where they are much loved & cared for. It can’t happen soon enough for them & I’m so sorry for the massive yards of red tape you all have to wade thru… but I’m thankful for your tenacity & unending dedication toward giving captive eles a better life, one closer to the one they might have had were that not stolen from their mothers, family & homeland.
        Thank you. 🐘💗💕🩷💕🙏
