Bambi is Protective of Maia

During the afternoon, Scott was headed Bambi’s way to bring her lunch. (She gets an extra meal to supplement her regular breakfast and dinner.) When he arrived at the pond where Maia, Bambi, and Guillermina were spending the afternoon, he could see that Maia was laying down and Bambi was a little behind her. Scott watched for a few moments and saw that she appeared to be scratching her bottom in the water, before resting her head on Maia.

Her posture and approach to the nearby Guille in that moment seemed to be saying protectively, “Don’t touch Maia.” Of course, Maia doesn’t need protection from Guille, but Bambi appeared to think she did. It’s possible that Bambi just didn’t want to encourage Guillermina to interrupt Maia’s nap for any horseplay, since that’s frequently what happens when the two of them get together. You can see in the video that Guille is already wet, so she’s already been playing in the pond. But Bambi may have wanted to allow Maia, the “pond blob,” more time to relax.

It’s really lovely to see Bambi put herself in that position for Maia. She seems to have more insecurities since her vision loss has increased, but she physically lets Guille know not to interrupt Maia. She uses her trunk to assert herself, twisting it around Guille’s. She may be telling the others that she still has a tough girl inside, who still has the ability to step up for her friend when necessary. After the three got out of the pond, the mood was silly and lighthearted, and Guillermina was immediately welcomed into the fold again.
