These days, Bambi gets an extra meal each day to ensure that she’s maintaining a healthy weight. We’ve recently started offering her some cooked pumpkin – much like we give to Mara since her initial gastrointestinal issues. She still enjoys crunching on some raw pumpkins, but the cooked version digests quickly and easily, and is gentler on older elephant teeth.
Once Bambi is finished with the cooked pumpkin, we’ve been giving her the “soup,” or the nice, thick juice that’s left in the bucket after her meal. Yesterday, she made the caregivers laugh out loud by sucking up the soup and spraying it all over her body, rather than in her mouth. It was an interesting choice when it came to getting oneself dirty, but it seemed to delight Bambi nonetheless.
