After her morning treatments, Bambi decided to avail herself of the mud wallow in Yard 4. Though it’s technically winter here in Mato Grosso, we’re having some intensely hot days. The mud wallows and ponds are being put to full use by the elephants. You’ll often see them covered in mud (as we showed you last week) or on their way to take a dip.
Here, Bambi is sitting on the edge of the wallow when Maia walks over to join her. Bambi decides to get silly and squishes her nose into the mud – which probably feels amazing. Because it’s after breakfast, Maia is in sleepy mode and seems to doze off a couple of times with her front two feet in the mud. Bambi apparently thinks this is a good idea and almost nods off herself. After a few minutes, the two ladies decide to move on to the next spot, together as usual.

Help take extra special care of an elephant that is close to your heart.
