Rana and Mara’s Reunion

This video takes place directly after yesterday’s clip. Rana had been in Yard 5, eating her medicinal apples and some hay. She and Mara started vocalizing back and forth with each other until Rana finally decided it was time to go find her friend.

Mara came out of the bushes quickly and the two started running and loudly bellowing toward each other. There was an abundance of excitement between both elephants. You don’t hear this kind of sound coming from the girls very often, if ever. It can sound a little bit intimidating if you don’t know what is going on. For that reason, Scott calls to the caregivers on the radio to inform them that what was happening wasn’t worrisome; it was, in fact, the opposite, with two elephants expressing their absolute joy, communicating vocally, with their raised tails, and touching each other’s faces. Kat, who didn’t have a radio on initially, gives Scott a minute, but then also checks in with him. The gleeful elephant celebration was a surprise to everyone.

P.S.: We’ve shown a video of Maia’s miniscule ear wiggle before. If you are watching Mara carefully, you can see that she does it, too.

Love your updates and reunion reports. Reunions at GSE are only possible because of the freedom you give them to wander… essential parts of an elephants nature…wandering and reunion.
