No More Talking

As I’m sure you’ve heard us say by now, the elephants will sometimes go silent when they know they are being filmed. We like to keep our videos of them either short and sweet or filmed from far away. When we take videos up close, it’s generally at a time when we’d be interacting with them anyway, so it doesn’t upset their routine; we want to keep their days as natural as possible.

This clip was taken after breakfast, which you might have guessed, given Maia’s very sleepy face; she basically insists on a good post-meal nap. But up until this video was taken, Maia, Bambi, and Guillermina were having a morning celebration, filled with trumpets and rumbles and, of course, some classic Guille squeaks. When Scott stepped over to the fence to see what the fun was about, things got quiet again. Guille makes a few little chirps, but that’s about all they were in the mood to communicate. With any luck, they’ll be chatty again at the next breakfast – celebrating their growing friendship with one another and a beautiful day at sanctuary.

Scott needs a body cam, similar to what police officers wear, so that the girls don’t recognize when they’re being filmed. I realize it’s an extravagance, but what great videos would result!
