Last week, we got a new load of hay. It can be difficult to get good quality hay sometimes – well…good enough for the sanctuary elephants. We do get hay that isn’t up to their standards, but our neighbors are extra grateful to take it for their cows, especially during the dry season. Hay quality is very environmentally influenced; you can have some that’s near perfect but gets a little extra moisture, which may not dry all the way when baled. That’s not a recipe for delicious hay. This most recent batch is quite nice. We actually taste the hay which, if good, has a really nice texture and is extremely palatable. It makes for happy elephants.
After breakfast, Mara and Rana are used to going to where their treatment is going to be held. This time they were near the barn, so we expected them to head that way. By the time the other girls eat, Mara and Rana are usually ready to come in for treatment – but they weren’t around. Scott and Mateus were waiting and waiting for those two to finish their hay, but it just didn’t seem to be happening. Mateus did Bambi’s treatment while they continued to watch for Mara and Rana. It was about 15-20 minutes longer than normal before they got back to the barn, because they apparently needed to finish every last bit. The girls in general seem happy and mellow. It’s the little things that make us happy some days, isn’t it?
