It’s still rainy season at the sanctuary, and that can come with lots of clouds and fog. On this particular morning, the rain was steadily coming down and it was misty all around. The showers began before breakfast with the girls and continued through the morning and during all of Rana and Mara’s daily treatments. Meanwhile, Bambi, Maia, and Guillermina were all in Yard 2, close to Yard 3. There’s a little area in that spot where they’ve dug some dirt out a bit, making a small hill. Maia and Bambi were in the lower section and Guille was above the ledge overlooking the edge.
All three elephants were making lots of little noises. Guille and Maia were pushing each other back and forth, seeming to play “Queen of the Mountain,” depending on who was closer to the top of the ledge. Maia eventually gave up and started sitting on the ground, squishing her bottom into the mud.
We thought we might be able to take a video of this, but as Scott went to walk in that direction, Guille was already looking his way and he didn’t want to interrupt their time. The sanctuary environment is one where we allow things to evolve naturally as much as we can. We don’t want to insert ourselves into a scenario like this that would likely change the dynamics. So while we’d like to be able to share some photos or videos, we know there’s a time and a place for that. But not to worry–there’s plenty of silly play going around and you can trust that the ladies are all having a lovely time.
