All five of the elephants here enjoy a daily allotment of fresh produce. Some have their favorites and others have definite dislikes. But, nobody is going to turn down a fresh watermelon.
In this video, Maia decides to dig right in – or rather, step right in. Her watermelon squashing technique is as delicate as possible, as to make very little mess. When she is taking her first bite, you can really hear those elephant molars making short work of the melon rind. Other bites are more delicate. But regardless, she is definitely savoring every mouthful.

June 8, 2021 at 3:44 pmWe’d never make them unload them. Haha. They’ve worked all their lives. But they certainly do love their watermelons.

June 8, 2021 at 3:55 pmCan’t wait to see videos of Pocha and Guillermina are also mashing their way into eating watermelon. Do they get watermelon at the Mendoza Ecoparque?
I also saw how the coronavirus is growing around ALL of South America, including Brazil and Argentina,
which will unfortunately delay the transport of the elephants from Argentina……..Any MORE posts and crossbars installed for Tamy yet, or for Kenya, and the other African Elephants?

June 8, 2021 at 4:27 pmPocha and Guillermina are given watermelon and other fruits at Mendoza. And, yes, fencing is progressing nicely on all of the enclosures.

June 9, 2021 at 4:12 pmSo sweet and fun to watch and hear! What percentage of the food for the girls are you able to grow/produce at the Sanctuary? Do you grow any fruit/food for all your humans too?
Sara says
June 9, 2021 at 5:18 pmWe enjoy having a garden here, but have not been able to replant since the wildfire. Before that, we grew melons, squash, pumpkins, cucumbers, greens, and a few other things. Hopefully we’ll be able to get it going again in the future.
