Video: Lady and Her Ear Flaps

In this video, Lady is exploring the back of Yard 5 – one of our purest and untouched spots and an area she enjoys quite a bit. It is very serene and the birds are singing in the background.

You may notice that she glances to her left, where workmen are cutting some pipes. They were about a mile away, but Lady appreciates knowing what is happening around her. She is calm and light, but is keeping an ear out in her Lady way. As we described in our recent EleFact, she is flapping her ears to show that she is relaxed, and to keep the bugs away. She also swipes her face with her trunk to keep them at bay. But mostly she is simply taking time to enjoy one of her favorite parts of the sanctuary.

Thanks to everyone who was concerned about Lady’s eye recently. She is doing quite well now!

Is lady walking stiffly in the front. She does seem relaxed but not sure I noticed before. Maybe it’s her feet

Some days she does walk a little more gently on her feet, depending on how sore they are.

I am really angry that humans can be so cruel to animals. Lady seems to not really pay much attention to the discomfort with her feet. It is amazing that she has grown so accustomed to the pain that she can be relaxed and just strolling along.

It’s true – she will never walk normally. But she does her best to keep moving right along!

Thank you for this post, so wonderful to view these clips, (over and over!) thru the lense of a more educated perspective- thanks to your EleFacts and other posts. Question: does Lady have a fused Left Ankle? Best to all of you.

So lovely, Lady Mae Sue. How did you manage to get this video? Someone was in the right place at the right time?

Sometimes we will go to areas they frequent to see if we can get some video. We always know where they are around mealtime, because we need to place their food nearby. It often depends on if they’re in an area that’s good for a photo or video – where they aren’t obscured by lots of brush, etc. because we do have to zoom in, in order to keep a safe distance.

For some reason it just really struck me watching this – what an amazing place sanctuary is. For people to put so much work into making this life possible for the elephants is incredible.

Beautiful videos of our beautiful Lady! I always have so many questions but so do not want to bother you guys. Are her feet improving with all the treatments and natural surfaces she is walking on? Do the girls have enough grasses and tree trunks to sustain their diet or do you have to feed them a lot with basics? I know fruits and vegies are a plus but am thinking of the basic food. And last one, we can all see amazing large area of forests the girls are pottering around what other wildlife is there? Any small mammals? Pangolins? Porcupines or anteaters? Any monkeys? There are monkeys in Brazilian forests. There are birds, but how many different species? Thank you!

We are happy to answer questions. Feel free to ask.
No, Lady’s feet aren’t getting better. We don’t expect them to improve. Her increased walking seemed to help some of the swelling she was experiencing go down, but otherwise all we can do is try to soothe them the best we can with treatments and give her light doses of pain medication to ease some of her discomfort. The girls have plenty of food in the habitat to live on. We give them additional food and produce because we need to make sure we are monitoring their food intake. When they are grazing, we don’t always know who is eating how much. This is especially true for an elephant like Mara who has had gastrointestinal issues and needs to put on weight. So, yes, they are given some food, but there is also sufficient food in the sanctuary – which is the best and most natural kind of food they could eat. We have many other wildlife here. There are antas, foxes, ocelots and several different species of cat, little anteaters, armadillos, rabbits, possum-type animals, and so many birds. Much more than we could reasonably list in one space. It’s a beautiful place to live.

There are also so monkeys, which I neglected to mention. Capuchin monkeys and several other little guys. We hear howler monkeys, but don’t see them.

Awwww…thank you for that detailed answer Sara! I always say you found a piece of paradise for those elephants but now I am sure it truly is so! I knew the wildlife must be amazing over there! After all it is Brazil! So glad you confirmed for me what I was thinking. I am sure girls do meet or spot some of these beautiful animals when on their walks! With all the destruction all over the globe it is so nice to know there are still such vibrant, alive places..xoxox
