After a recent dinner, Scott was driving into the habitat to place some of the treats for the girls to find later in the evening. Rana and Bambi left Mara and came speeding down to where the 4-wheeler was parked. The ladies initially headed down what we call “middle road,” but then made a quick left to check out the area where Scott originally stopped. We have jokingly called them “land sharks” because they run right to where they know the food will be coming from and wait right there for their bonus goodies.
Mara has been showing a bit of independence from Bambi lately, so she didn’t follow them right away. But the idea of snacks was too much to resist and she soon headed out to meet them. All three elephants were prioritizing food over each other, so there were no welcoming vocalizations when Mara arrived. So Scott ended up with three very food focused, smiley “land sharks” that evening and had a good laugh.
The video shows Bambi and Rana, with Mara following shortly after.

November 7, 2021 at 8:16 amThis made me think of the very old Saturday Night Live skit which I’m sure some of your fans will remember. There’s a knock at the door and you hear a meek voice say “Candy-gram”. When the door is eventually opened it’s a SHARK! So I was picturing Miss Bambi at the door. LOL. Thanks for giving me that visual.
