After her Saturday morning treatment, Lady headed away from the barn and into Yard 4. She spent the rest of the weekend hanging out in different areas throughout. There is evidence she spent time at the edge of the pond in 4 (yes, dung), but there are no signs she went in the water.
Something we’ve noticed about Lady is that she isn’t interested in doing things the easy way. If there are two paths in front of her, and one is an actual path, and the other isn’t quite a path at all, nine times out of ten, she will ignore both and go straight through the bushes. There are no words for how much we adore this endearing trait of hers, and what it says about her personality.
If she followed easily, we wanted her to come back to the barn today for treatment. Kat headed out this morning on a four-wheeler to see if she was interested in our plans. Lady followed very happily, but in true Lady fashion, she had to stop every few steps for every reason and no reason. She would go on the dirt path to dust herself, and then would head back to the bushes when she was ready to walk again, so Kat mostly led her directly through the underbrush. They both made it back to the barn eventually, where Lady enjoyed her foot soaks, more treats, and an afternoon nap.

January 13, 2020 at 5:16 pmDo you think walking on brush feels better than hard dirt on her sore feet??
EleComposer says
January 13, 2020 at 6:01 pmIt might feel better on her feet, but she definitely seems to like having the brush rub along her sides. She also likes stopping and standing in the middle of group of bushes or trees for a couple of minutes. If you remember, one of or first videos of Lady was her kicking and playing with some of the saplings and bushes close to the barn. It may just be because it’s something she didn’t have for 50 years of her life, that she really appreciates it now.

January 13, 2020 at 5:29 pmSweet story of this beautiful girl. Taking the more difficult path, wow Lady! “Two roads diverged in a wood and I took the one less traveled by, and that has made all the difference”. – R. Frost. Her journey, her choice. I love hearing about her. Thank you!

January 13, 2020 at 6:58 pmOh, Lady, what a unique personality. So, she is loving her foot soaks, I see. I know it is soon to ask, but, are her feet any better?
EleComposer says
January 13, 2020 at 7:38 pmYes, some improvement from what little care we can do – we are still training her to present her feet for some of the footwork we need to do to start to see a substantial improvement (we hope).

January 13, 2020 at 5:37 pmAwww, sweetie-pie. I’m wondering how her feet are doing. Would you show before and after pics of her feet? If you want them to heal more, I understand. Also, I would love to hear from an elephant expert (you) what Lady’s bushwhacking ways say about her personality. 🙂

January 13, 2020 at 6:02 pmWe were just talking today about needing to get another full set of photos. Outside of the reduced swelling, and cuticle improvement, there won’t be drastic change until we are able to do work on her pads, which she still has a lot of training for. You can see a difference in the before and after photo of her that we just posted the other day.
