As we learn more about Baby, we’ve begun to watch for patterns in her behavior: what time of day she’s most active; if she wants to be physically and mentally engaged during the same times every day–whether with nature or her caregivers; and marking those times when she seems content to explore on her own. Her care team has been noticing that in the morning and afternoon, Baby likes to wander into the habitat, but then in the middle of the day, she often comes back near the barn. She could be looking for caregivers, but also may be seeking out baths or dirt piles to roll in.
While in some ways, it’s sweet and charming that she feels an attachment to her caregivers, we expect that will wane over time, especially once she has access to other elephants. In fact, she’s been increasingly leaving the barn and walking away from her caregivers while they’re finishing up work in the area. It’s promising when elephants feel comfortable enough to leave the care staff while they’re still nearby, choosing instead to venture out into their exciting new world. We’ll always be there if she needs comfort, but she’s showing bravery and a strong will so far. All we can say is: Go Baby!

July 15, 2026 at 4:34 pmWe wrote about this on Sunday, if you want to scroll back and read. Right now there’s no timeline, since the required tests she’s in quarantine for can take numerous weeks to be processed.
