Today’s podcast is on a topic that is not only very close to our hearts but is also something that Scott and Kat discuss on a regular basis. Unfortunately, we live in a time where an organization using ‘sanctuary’ in their name doesn’t mean much of anything. Anyone can co-opt the title, and places that are anything but sanctuaries certainly do. But, even when it comes to reputable sanctuaries, there aren’t a lot of discussions about recovery that go much beyond surface level.
Even superficial healing is substantial: vast–space natural habitats, living amongst others of their own kind, respect, choice. It’s something most captive elephants will never know. But once elephants have those things, it is truly only the beginning of their journey of recovery. It’s a topic we could spend weeks talking about, and this episode just gets the conversation started, but if you are interested in why getting past the surface of healing is so important, join us for a listen.
If you don’t do podcasts, you can listen on our website https://globalelephants.org/podcast/. If you are already a fan of podcasts, just search for ‘Global Rumblings’ on your favorite podcast app and listen there.
The video is of Maia and Guida less than a week after their arrival at sanctuary. We briefly discuss Guida’s seemingly instantaneous transformation upon her arrival to sanctuary during the podcast. And for some of you, this may be the first time you get to see this side of Maia.

I can never express my thanks to all at Sanctuary for the experience you provide. Love your podcasts! Just another place to absorb your knowledge and to delve deeper into these lovely lady’s lives, those with us now and those who gone to Sanctuary heaven. Excited to continue the journey! May 2, 2023 at 3:38 pmEpisode 7 is the first time I have listened to the podcast due to me being a bit of a dinosaur who doesn’t understand the concept of podcasts. (I’m working on it). I followed your directions to go to the GSE website to listen there. So I just want to say that I found it very interesting and informative. Like all your followers I enjoy the daily briefings and videos of what the girls are doing and how they are interacting with each other, but the podcast takes us to a much deeper level of understanding. I hope that keepers of captive elephant around the world can be reached by Kat and Scott’s collective wisdom born of experience. I must also give a shout out to the interviewer Nadia, who leads with meaningful questions and makes insightful observations. Time well spent. I recommend it to all fans of GSE.
