In the past few days, we’ve noticed Rana & Maia spending a lot of time together. We’ve observed them spending more and more time together since Ramba’s passing, but it has very recently shifted into something more noteworthy.
We’ve done a few posts lately on their relationship and how it seems to be evolving. However, in the past 3-4 days, Rana and Maia seem to be within the vicinity of each other throughout most of the day. Neither is wandering away or splitting up.
A fair amount of the time, they are pretty close – just a few elephant lengths away, but other times they are also touching and hanging out. The touching isn’t only with their trunks, but their bodies as well – we may see them butt to butt or side by side, just making sure they are linked physically in some way.
We don’t know where this is going or what it means; at this point, it’s just a change we have noticed in them. It seems like the two are consciously and intentionally spending more time close to each other. As part of this shift, Rana seems more relaxed in Maia’s company than she generally is. Maia also looks a little softer than she usually does.
This new behavior pattern might be temporary, or it could be something more. It’s too soon to tell, but all that matters is that they both seem happy about it.
Photo is of Rana, mid-happy-ear-flap.

January 21, 2020 at 10:12 amI hope it does develop into a close friendship. I hope Lady lets them in a little more. Maybe Mara can help Lady take her guard down more. All in good time at their own pace. Sanctuary does wonders for all.

January 21, 2020 at 10:20 amI feel sure that elephants live in the now even though they may remember all the bad things that happened in their live. as they have good memories. The other day I saw some terrible pictures of elephants that were just skin and bone and they were under the “care” of humans. It broke my heart and I just wished that I could transport them immediately to GES so that they would know the love and care they would have there. I am so happy for every elephant that gets the chance to end up under your loving care. Rana and Maia are so fortunate that they have time to bond even more. Bless all of you for all the work you do.

January 21, 2020 at 1:10 pmThat is so sweet. I wonder if they understand each other’s loss and are comforting each other now Maia understands that Rana is also grieving? Very comforting to see this. Thank you so much for all of your updates. ❤️?❤️
