Update on Mara’s permit status: APPROVED!!!!!!!!!!
While her paperwork is approved, she still needs to undergo her 30-day quarantine period, as required by law.
Scott will be traveling to Buenos Aires next week to spend a few days at the EcoParque. He will be working closely with Mara’s team of dedicated caregivers as well as coordinating with officials at the EcoParque. They will begin the quarantine while Scott is there. Scott will return to the Sanctuary in Brazil during the majority of the quarantine itself. He will return to Buenos Aires a few days before Mara’s transport and will travel with her, coordinating the caravan. Her rescue is around the same distance as Rana’s rescue, so we expect it to take 4-5 days.
The quarantine has to be a minimum of 30-days, but it can be longer. Due to scheduling and logistics, Mara’s quarantine could potentially run over, and we are looking to begin her transport at the end of March or beginning of April.
Mara was born in India before 1970 and was initially transported to Germany. She ultimately ended up in South America, where she belonged to at least three circuses – one in Uruguay, then two circuses in Argentina. She’s been in her current enclosure since 1995. We are very excited to give her a new life. She will have room to wander, mud wallows, ponds, creeks, itchy-scratchy tree, and friends – Rana, Maia, and Lady. We can’t wait to embark on this journey with all of you.

February 20, 2020 at 9:36 pmWonderful news, Mara will finally get most of what she needs after all her trials and tribulations. Their histories are so extreme. Now we know more. There’s nothing like watching and getting updated on the changes that occur in sanctuary. I’m sure we will all be helping to make it happen. Scott and team doing a lot of travelling – seeing the country and that huge continent ! Enjoy and Thank you all.
