We launched our Fences4Kenya campaign on Giving Tuesday to an outpouring of support.
- As of the end of the day Friday, we had raised $87,233 for Kenya.
- Our Brazilian partners, Santuário de Elefantes Brasil, have raised an additional $9,335 in U.S dollars through their fundraiser as well.
- This brings our total to $96,568. This funds all of Yard 1, all of Yard 2, and almost half of Yard 3!!
Thanks to a very generous Foundation, the African Elephant Care Center was previously funded, and that construction has been completed. All that is left is fences, and then we can rescue female African elephants, beginning with Kenya.
We are currently shopping for steel – the availability and pricing of used metal are always changing, so that is a bit of a process. As soon as we find the size and thickness we need (at a reasonable price) we will place our first order and start building immediately.
Kenya lives her life in a barren enclosure, on hard-packed dirt. It’s difficult for anyone to see an elephant in a place like that, and it’s harder still to see her in that enclosure knowing how close we are to bringing her home to sanctuary. Her habitat at the Sanctuary will be significantly larger than the space she has now, but it will also have so much that she needs to live her life fully.
We hope to relocate Kenya to the sanctuary within the first six months of 2020 so her life as an elephant can truly begin – this won’t be possible without everyone’s support. There’s so much that Kenya needs, and building these fences is the next step to giving her the world. We plan for this fundraiser to run until the end of the year.
We are so grateful to everyone who has shared or donated to get this fundraiser where it is today. We are humbled and amazed by what each of you has accomplished, together. Kenya needs this, Kenya deserves this, and we are so close to making this happen for her.
