Guida

Maia From the Drone

This is a short video we took with the drone during one of our ‘check-ins’ to see where the girls are and how they are doing. Maia is in the front, Guida is at the back, by the fence. The area they are in is the Southeast corner of the 4th yard- I say this because we mention the areas in posts often. Although there are moments that we are doing treatment or training, this is what our girls spend most of their day doing- just grazing.

One of the ways we can tell Maia from a distance (like from the house) is something you can see here. She is the only one who regularly flaps with each ear individually. Ear flaps are generally simultaneous, Maia does one after the other, which is very obvious from a distance.

As the camera rotates around, to Maia’s lovely belly and backside view, the view head off in the direction of the barn (although it’s a distance away.) The Beleza Na Vida pond is directly in front of Maia, and the dirt four-wheeler path is what we call ‘Middle Road.’ Lollipop tree is out of site, off to the right of where Maia is standing at the end of the video. ‘The Piqui’ tree is past the pond, down middle road and just out of sight. We have many of these trees, but this is the biggest one and one of the girls’ favorite hangouts and scratching posts. The macaws love the fruit, the elephants, not so much.

Now you have a better lay of the land while getting to watch cute Maia enjoy her grass. And since inevitably someone will mention elephants not liking drones, because of wild African elephants and their response- these girls don’t care about the drone. As you can see, Maia isn’t phased, although when we do check in with them, we generally stay much further away as not to disturb naps, play or socialization. Not only are African elephants much different than Asian elephants, but wild and captive elephants differ significantly as well. If the girls showed signs of stress, aggravation or discomfort with the drone, we wouldn’t use it.

How The Girls Spent Today

Rana

Gotta love all of the little nooks and crannies the girls find to hide in.

Today Maia and Rana spent most of the day together. Maia and Guida had breakfast by the East Pond. That pond does have a name ‘Beleza Na Vida’ (beauty in life) for future reference.  Later they made their way closer to the barn and bumped into Rana at a favorite tree. Guida got a little pushy with Rana over a palm that Rana didn’t want to share. Nothing big, just not exactly sweet.

Once the palm was gone, all three ladies hung out for a while in the shade, with Rana slowly closing the gap between them so she could stand side by side. After a while, one by one they walked off and Guida ended up going off on her own while Maia and Rana headed East and spent a good chunk of the afternoon together. Late in the day, Maia went swimming on her own and for dinner ended up back with Guida.

Everyone has their favorite elephant, the one they gravitate towards, but for us, we tend to have a soft spot for those who act out. We don’t approve of nor encourage Guida’s behavior or other ‘bad’ behavior, but we do know that in general, when an elephant acts out, two big reasons are because of insecurities or fear.

Maia came labeled as the ‘bad girl’ and had hurt people in her past. It was a defensive, ‘I’m going to hurt you before you hurt me’ behavior that we’ve seen before. Winkie is another prime example. Her aggression had deep roots in fear, some stemming back from her younger years. Elephants can heal and move on, but some of their past is harder to shake than others.

So when we see Guida very purposefully not being sweet, we know she is struggling. With what exactly, we can’t be sure, but there are many possibilities. We do know she has come a tremendous way in two years and that she will get through this as well and all three will grow from it.

Some Guida and Rana Time

The other morning Guida and Rana spent some nice quiet time together. Just as an FYI, when the girls do this, they aren’t locked together and the third elephant isn’t locked somewhere else. There are simply times when they go in their own direction, and it’s not always together.

Guida and Rana spent a nice amount of time together, napping, smelling, touching and scratching. Since Maia is often more interactive with Rana when the three are together, it was nice that Guida and Rana had their own time.

And of course, Rana was a total sweetie, waiting for Guida when she was ready to go. Even though Maia and Guida haven’t always been 100% receptive with Rana, she has remained open to their friendship. Rana is doing a very good job at adjusting to their desires and mood, and it is helping their relationship slowly grow.

The Lovely Miss Guida

Guida

To round out our beauties this week, the lovely Miss Guida. She’s a little on the sleepy side but still happily flapping and enjoying her dinner.

Guida loves areas like this. When she and Maia walk somewhere together, Maia will stay on the road, but Guida prefers to venture slightly off, walking instead through the woods. She ends up in the same place, she simply likes to mosey through the saplings, picking vines and individual leaves and stopping at some of the magical little-hidden pastures that can be found throughout.

This specific area is a favorite of everyone and one of the first places we look if any of them are MIA at dinner time.

Friday is Shopping Day

Maia

Lovely day here, just busy. Friday is shopping day and at the end of the day our truck returns full of elephant and tapir produce along with some human food as well.

That doesn’t put a damper on the elephants’ day though, it even makes Saturday morning extra delicious. Today the girls all spent some time together after breakfast, then each walked away (in the same direction) at their own pace. When we checked on them with the drone in the afternoon, Rana was swimming in the pond and Maia and Guida were nowhere to be seen. This usually means nap time, getting some rest in while Rana is distracted.

Ramba’s foot continues to do well. She is cooperating with her soaks and treatment like a champ, and so far there hasn’t been any further progression. This may change, but for now, it’s doing ok.

Sweet Moment Photos

These photos go with the post from yesterday. Although a video is nice to have, we know it was taken from a bit far away (as to not disturb the moment). You can see more of Rana’s cheesy grin and Maia’s soft face in the photos, so we wanted to share them as well
