Guida

Adventures With Guida

For those who didn’t know of Guida before her arrival at the sanctuary, she was frail in appearance, about 1000 lbs underweight and spent 98% of her day stereotyping. This is Guida now. Maia is a bit of a tank, but Guida can hold her own. These girls don’t have to cross the streams, especially not during storms when the water level rises, but they genuinely seem to enjoy the challenge. There are also areas that are much easier to cross, we can do it with a four-wheeler, but they prefer to choose their own way.

We are trying to set up a motion camera at one of the places the girls like to cross. It is steep enough on the one side that the girls just often slide down and walk up. You can see when someone has gone down recently, by the rump slide trail it leaves. It would be fantastic to able to show and share just how agile and adventurous they are.

All 3 Ladies Spending Time Together

Rana Maia Guida

When all three ladies spend time together, in the past it has been in the yards closest to the barn. Usually under different favorite trees of theirs. Lately, we have been finding the three of them or Rana and one of the other ladies, together out in the far reaches of the habitat.

This afternoon Rana (front) and Maia (middle) had already been together, and Guida (back) decided to join them. The photos show both ladies putting their trunks up to smell her upon her arrival.

They have all been doing great with each other and the number of times we find them together in the habitat is slowly increasing. But it’s really nice to catch them just mellow and grazing, a few feet from one another. After Rana’s initial excitement to have friends, she learned that toning it down just a bit works wonders.

Maia’s Morning Joy

Volume up!!

It has been a little while since we shared a video of Maia and Guida and their silly morning vocalizations. Some mornings all it takes is a hello, and this is the answer you get in return.

Guida is on the left, Maia is on the right. They are outside of the barn before breakfast, although lately, they have been having breakfast delivered to them in the habitat.

Maia’s Evening Swim

MaiaAt dinnertime last night, all three ladies were in different places in the habitat. Maia generally finds the four-wheeler first if you are driving around looking, so she ate first. After feeding her, Scott drove around looking for Guida and Rana, and in the process, Maia decided to go for a swim. Apparently, she ignores the rule of no swimming after dinner.

All of the girls were found, although we have no idea where Guida actually was because she popped up on middle road after a bit of searching.

Rana Bug and Dinner

We had a long, steady, soaking of a rain last night that lasted most of the evening. And this morning Rana and Maia looked very tired. While Guida was still a bit zooming and all sorts of spunky. The girls were all close to each other this morning and spent the majority of the day together.

Maia and Rana spent some time together initially. After Maia walked away, Guida came over with a head of steam, but when she arrived by Rana’s side, she shifted into her mellow self. Shortly after that, all three girls had a standing nap party under one of their favorite trees. It seems the rain was not only good for the streams and the plant life but also to create sweet moments with our ladies.

Miss Guida in Spitfire Mode

GuidaLovely dainty, ladylike Miss Guida was a little spitfire yesterday morning. While Maia is usually our wild child, apparently Guida wanted a turn. Guida was still Guida, just amped up as if on a coffee buzz. Her usually mosey speed was anything but as she playfully ran around.

It didn’t last too long, she is Guida after all.   By the time the afternoon rolled around, she was back to her much more mellow and grounded self, but always a beauty.
