It turns out there was a bit of short video from Maia and Rana’s interactions yesterday. It was nearly impossible to write text on the video since the explanations are long and the video is not, so it will all be in the post. Everything that went on between them was 100% positive, no dominance displays and affection was mutual on both sides.
Since Rana’s ‘stalking incident’ with Maia and Guida, any time she would try to stick her trunk in their mouths, they would clamp shut- not on her trunk, but before she was able to get it in. In this video, you can see Maia is very relaxed, allows Rana to put her trunk in her mouth and reciprocates.
There was a lot of nuzzling on both sides, Rana seeming comfortable enough to rub her head into Maia. If you watch closely you can see a second or two where Rana appears to check that things are still all good, she sees they are and continues on. It’s hard to see, between the rain and the lighting, but Maia has on a very soft and sweet face.
Guida chose not to be involved at all. She didn’t try to come between them, but she also didn’t choose to be part of socializing either. She seems to be having a harder time believing that a new friend would be a nice thing to have. All in time.

January 30, 2019 at 9:01 amHey Carey, I just did a little research at Kat’s request on this issue. And it appears to be a browser issue. I’m not sure if you are using Google Chrome or not, but here’s a link to an article talking specifically about the HTML5 error message and Chrome :https://support.google.com/youtube/thread/964963. I noticed other google results addressing other browsers as well. I did double-check to make sure it’s not an issue with me/us uploading the videos to Youtube and couldn’t find any indication that the problem is on that end. But if you come across anything that suggests it might have to do with the upload, please let us know. Hopefully, you will find an easy solution to the issue. I know that I have to clear my Chrome cache a lot – more than I have ever had to do with any other browser. But again, you might not be using Chrome. Thanks for letting us know of the issue, Carey. January 31, 2019 at 7:59 amThanks very much for your help Carolyn, I have discovered it was a fault on my old pc, on which I use Opera and Chrome, I just completed a full scan and it seems to have sorted it out. I thought it would be my end, you would laugh at my pc! I will also make sure I clear the cache – quite right. Its a lovely video, so glad I can now watch it!

January 31, 2019 at 2:24 pmI’m so glad you were able to get to the bottom of the issue, Carey! So frustrating when things just stop working and such a challenge to get to the solution. Enjoy the videos!

January 29, 2019 at 11:31 pmYour videos are very welcome but why not use them in landscape mode instead of portrait as it would make much more use of the space available?

January 30, 2019 at 8:19 amWe have mentioned in the past that often we don’t take photos or videos of these moments because we don’t want to affect them. Often, if we are in the area, things will change, the girls will get distracted and the moment shifts. The only reason we have a video of this is due to one of our caregivers already being in an area where she could use her phone to quickly take a short video. Most younger people, because of FB live and Instagram stories, always take video in portrait mode. Although landscape mode is nice, we’re just thrilled we had any video of the moment to be able to share and are grateful she got the footage.
