Earlier this year, the Elephant Sanctuary Brazil family lost Minnie the dog, an important member of our animal crew. She and her sister Molly were the longest residents of the property, having lived here for even longer than Scott and Kat. Many of you have expressed concern about Molly since the loss of her sister and lifelong companion, and we’re happy to report that there’s another sanctuary dog around these days to keep her company. Stella joined us a few months ago and quickly made her way into the hearts of everyone who meets her.
Stella was found in the parking lot of a grocery store where Scott and Kat were shopping. She was initially distrustful when they wanted to get a closer look at her condition. She had wounds on her head that were infested with maggots and her coloring was incredibly pale. Eventually, Kat sat down and Stella walked right up to her. After a trip to the vet, it became clear that she would need treatment and a significant amount of time to recover. And so another sanctuary dog was adopted.
At this point, Stella is not yet at 100% health. She still has mange and needs periodic treatments, but she’s much improved from when she was initially discovered all those months ago. Many people find her to visually be like a miniature version of Molly, especially when they sit right next to each other (which you can see in this photo). When Stella adopted us, we knew that Minnie wasn’t long for this world, but we had no idea Minnie would be gone so soon. While we still have a Minnie-shaped hole in our hearts, Stella has made herself right at home in our ESB family and brings joy with every walk, run down the sanctuary roads, and ride on the 4-wheeler. We look forward to seeing who Stella develops into after some time here at sanctuary.

May 18, 2025 at 6:44 pmThe animal distribution gods new that Molly would need a friend and that Stella needed the best of homes who would give her the love and support she needed to get healthy and live her best life. It’s funny how they know this and send the ones we need the most right to us. Stella has a purpose and was sent where she could fulfil it! She is quite the little cutie and the resemblance to Molly is definitely there. Welcome Stella, so glad you found Kat and Scott.

May 18, 2025 at 11:27 pmLove always makes a way! Stella is beautiful. I once had a dog in Georgia who got heart worms. I’m wondering is heart worms a problem for dogs and other animals at the sanctuary?

May 19, 2025 at 8:19 amit is not very common in this area, although we still test for it to make sure the dogs don’t have it.
