Sunday Smile: Bambi’s Hay Shawl

May 24, 2026

Female Asian elephant Bambi tosses hay onto her back

Among the three lovely elephants who share space, we’re used to seeing Maia and Guillermina frequently walking around with piles of hay on their heads, but Bambi is also likely to decorate herself with her breakfast. In fact, there was a day not too long ago when all five of the Asian elephants were wearing hay hats at once. For this week’s Sunday Smile, we caught Bambi mid-hay toss, aiming for her back instead of her head. She also had a large mouthful, which she ate slowly and at a measured pace; she was seemingly at ease with her friends, her meal, and her new shawl.

I wish I could see her other side. Is the hay evenly placed on her back? Bambi, we have high expectations of haywear.

Do we think the girls do this to transport their ” goods” elsewhere to enjoy snacking or, are they just being so dang cute?
