Want to know what’s making us smile this Sunday? The sight of two young, fast elephants having a playful afternoon on their own terms. Maia and Bambi were once our two speediest girls, but they’ve been overtaken by Guille (identified by her dark, hairy tail) and Baby (with the blonder tail hair), who seem to be comfortable walking quickly side by side. Both were hanging out by the barn–hence the presence of multiple bars in the video–and made a couple of rounds through the yard before heading out into the trees. This clip demonstrates how having a barrier between the human and the elephants allows the elephants to relax and focus on their own experiences rather than factor the human into the equation. These two girls seem to be working out their own dynamics as they spend more time in the same space.

It’s wonderful to see that Baby. Has somebody she can hang out with. I’ve adopted Guille so along with many other people I’m sure she’s kind of part mine and I’m so happy that she has found a new friend. Makes my heart smile. OK you guys know you need to find another male elephant, so Sandro will have somebody. Of course he does seem to be doing pretty well by himself. Thank you guys are wonderful.
