The Simple Act of Taking a Step

WHICH HAS BROUGHT PAIN FOR YEARS
Lady’s journey through life hasn’t been easy, and it showed in her fear and distrust. As she began to relax into sanctuary life, her protective walls started to drop, and she decided to open herself up a bit. A few weeks ago, she made an enormous emotional leap and allowed us to begin trimming and filing her feet.
Now that trimming has begun, we are uncovering some underlying issues and can treat them more effectively now. Her nails, cuticles, and pads are addressed differently, which means she receives numerous sprays, flushes, topicals, clays, and soaks. The time and money invested in her care are significant, but we have already seen the benefit in her increased comfort and speed. And thankfully, Lady loves her buckets of fruit and vegetable treats and her dried cranberry and Froot Loop bonuses. We don’t ask her to come in for treatment; she is the one who comes back to the barn and seems to request that we get to work.
We are asking for help to cover the cost of the numerous products being used on her feet and her food rewards that keep her happy and make all of it possible. Her listed monthly/yearly cost includes the products needed for her foot care and her food. After decades of her feet being neglected, it will take a tremendous amount to get her on the right track, but she is already on her way.
Lady's Steps of Hope 4-Part Series

Part I: Lady’s Back Feet
About a month ago, Lady started to become a little more relaxed with touch, and it seemed to have shifted overnight. One day she didn’t want us to put our hands on her feet during training; the next day, she preferred hands to the target. Just like that…

Part II: Lady’s Front Feet
The first tremendous hurdle had been cleared; Lady allowed us to begin working on her back feet. We got some substantial work done over the course of a week, so it was time to take the next step- attempting footwork on her front feet. That is the dangerous end…

Part III: The Emotional Aspect
Lady is a strong elephant, both physically and emotionally. Her feet have been in terrible condition for a long time, yet she pushes through it. This is something we have seen in other elephants as well, but it always takes us back a bit. Through a lifetime of being in the circus…

Part IV: Our Findings
Elephant feet are nuanced and complicated and still a leading cause of death for captive elephants. Lady’s feet aren’t just uncomfortable or an inconvenience, they have defined part of her life. As much as we would like to go in and ‘fix’ everything, we can’t do that safely…
THANK YOU
We are so grateful for all of your support and love. Reading your words about how the girls have touched you and brought joy into your days is a testament to how special they are. Thank you for opening your heart and for loving them for who they are.
