At breakfast time, sometimes we encourage the elephants to shift into a different area in the yard so that we can clean the habitat or do any necessary checkups. Many mornings, Maia and Guillermina are together and when we ask them to walk in a particular direction, Guille follows right away, quite rapidly. This used to be Maia’s MO as well, but recently, she has been showing us that she is in no hurry and knows we’ll come back for her eventually.
For a while, there seemed to be a slight competition between the two of who would walk to the caregiver first to see what goodies they could get. But by now Maia knows that someone will head back and lead her to a good spot or decide to feed her where she is but, either way, there will be plenty of food. There’s no way around it: Maia can be very lazy in the mornings.
That may be because she is an incredibly active elephant. All of the girls are active at night, but Maia is often more active than most. True to form, and it has been this way since her arrival, she’s the only elephant we see lying down to sleep during the day. This is just a way that Maia shows us she’s just fine with a slow morning routine.

February 26, 2023 at 12:13 amHey Maia, I can relate! I’m also a night owl and prefer to snooze when other people are awake. We could be roommates!

February 26, 2023 at 1:21 amMaia is beautiful and looks strong and looks strong headed. hahaah I love it. She knows where she is and what means to her caretakers–that if she follows or if she doesn’t follow everything will be normal as always. : ))))
